The Extensive Reading class aims to give participants an opportunity to focus on developing their fluent reading skills. Toward this goal, class time will be allocated to individual sustained silent reading. As a result, participants should be prepared to work independently and autonomously during class. The instructor will assist students in selecting level appropriate material and in creating a self-directed study plan to monitor progress. Though an exact number of books to have read by the end of the course will not be prescribed, participants will be expected to read at least an additional hour outside of class as homework.
LEARNING AIMS
Participants undertaking this course will
• learn how to direct and manage their reading practice to improve fluency;
• have an opportunity to share their ideas and opinions on a wide range of topics; and
• emerge as confident, motivated prose readers with a strong sense of personal success in reading English.
