Practical Teaching Methods
(PTM)

Teachers not only need theory about second language learning but also need to know how this theory has been translated successfully into classroom practice. This course, in essence, tries to bridge this link between theory and practice. The course will focus on the principles of effective classroom practice in the teaching of foreign languages and give learners hands-on teaching practice in the context of teaching English through English. In addition to looking at the four macro skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing, this course will also examine the teaching of grammar, vocabulary, and phonology so that these activities are situated in teaching episodes in their proper place.

LEARNING AIMS

Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be able to
• discuss key principles of language teaching based on current theories concerning language acquisition, linguistics, pedagogics, and the sociology and psychology of learning;
